Ascent to Puig Major

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEWS OF THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN
Not that long ago, the Puig Major massif was known as the Mallorcan Mont Blanc (among other names). This was because for much of the winter season it remained covered by a majestic white blanket of snow. Climate change has been responsible for the demise of such spectacle, although it still snows most years, nowadays, it rarely remains white for more than a few days every winter.
Once you have completed the ascent, the panoramic views from the summit of this imposing Mallorcan alpine mountain, are truly incredible: on crystal clear days, not only can you see a large part of the island territory of Mallorca, perhaps all the Balearic Islands and with luck, the Mediterranean coastline of the Iberian Peninsula: Catalonia and Valencia. Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria cited the views from the top of Puig Major as the most beautiful in the western Mediterranean.
PUIG MAJOR, HIGHEST POINT OF THE BALEARIC ISLANDS
At 1436 m, the Puig Major is the highest peak in the Balearics, but it is located within a military zone. Instead, you will climb Puig des Migdia, the second highest point, also located in the Puig Major massif. The ascent is undertaken along the narrow southwest face and the descent along the north face. The route, through rough terrain, runs along the entire ridge that overlooks the Sóller valley, tracing a masterful circular route. The final 100 m before reaching the summit of Puig des Migdia (maximum height 1400m) and the ridge that then connects with Penyal des Migdia, requires full concentration: a scramble through rugged terrain that involves the use of the hands to keep on going. Maybe we could redefine this mountaineering hike as “ridgering”.
You will enjoy the most beautiful but demanding Mallorcan hiking route.
